Elton Custis
Elton Custis’ story is the story of Camden. Homegrown. Hardworking. Community minded. Community is really what inspires Elton. It’s why he’s spent the past 22 years of his life listening to, and advocating for, the city that has made him the man he is today. Elton’s journey in public service began as a young man coming up in the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees). Eager to make a contribution to his city, Elton ran for city council in 2001 and for mayor in 2009 and 2021. While Elton wasn’t successful in his early bids for public office, it did prepare him for his historic run for the Camden School District Advisory Board in 2019 where he won the first elected seat since the state takeover. In that race, he ran against the entrenched establishment and overcame a well-financed opposition, delivering his message of “Kids First.” Since his win, Elton has never looked back. Elton is a fighter and his willingness to give of himself to serve others is unwavering. Elton is currently running for the position of Camden County Commissioner. He is truly about the people and putting people first in all that he sets out to do. Born and raised in Camden, Elton hails from the Parkside section of town and is a graduate of Camden High School. A strong proponent of education, Elton received a B.A. from Rowan University, and an M.S. from Fairleigh Dickinson University. When he’s not fighting for our children and the community, Elton works as a Treatment Specialist for many reentry organizations in Camden County and as well as the Department of Labor Programs Coordinator. Elton served as President of Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Rho Sigma Chapter (Camden). He also serves as a board member of Daelight Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness on suicide prevention in inner cities. Elton is also a founding member of the Young Urban Leaders Global which helps young people find their inner strength to be amazing leaders in their communities and beyond. Elton’s hands may be full of community activist work, but he always finds time for His Family who are truly his strength in this fight for equality for all. It is never easy to stand and fight alone but it is necessary when you are standing for what is right for your community and yourself. “Being a member of these great organizations has helped me to cultivate all my leadership skills and abilities to become an outstanding leader and for that I am thankful; For I am ready to be the change that my community wants and needs.” |
